What is agentic AI?
Agentic AI is artificial intelligence that pursues goals by planning steps, choosing tools and taking actions with limited human direction. Instead of only generating text in reply to a prompt, an agentic system reads results, adjusts its plan and keeps working until the task is complete or blocked.
How it works
Agentic AI wraps a language model in a loop. The model receives a goal, breaks it into steps, and calls tools such as search, a CRM or an email system to carry out each step. After every action it reads the result and decides what to do next.
The loop ends when the goal is met, when the system needs a human decision or when it hits a limit. Memory, tool access and stopping rules determine how capable and how safe the system is.
Examples
Common agentic tasks include researching a list of accounts and writing a summary for each, triaging a support inbox and routing cases, updating stale deals in a CRM after checking recent activity, and assembling a report from several data sources.
What these share is multi-step work across more than one system. A plain chat model could describe how to do each task. An agentic system actually does it, which is why access control and logging matter far more here than in ordinary chat.
Risks and controls
Because agentic AI takes actions, its mistakes are actions too: a wrong email sent, a record overwritten, a meeting booked with the wrong person. The standard controls are least-privilege access, human approval for sensitive steps, clear limits on spending and scope, and a complete log of every action.
Organizations adopting agentic AI usually start with narrow, reversible tasks and expand access as the system proves reliable. Governance is part of the design, not an afterthought.
Questions
How is agentic AI different from generative AI?
Generative AI produces content, such as text or images, in response to a prompt. Agentic AI uses that ability to pursue a goal: it plans steps, calls tools, takes actions in other systems and checks results. Most agentic systems are built on generative models, but they add tools, memory and decision loops.
Is agentic AI safe to use in business systems?
It can be, with the right controls. Give it only the access each task needs, require human approval for sensitive actions, and keep a full log of what it did. Start with tasks that are easy to review and reverse, then expand scope as you gain confidence.
