DEFINITION

What are AI agent skills?

AI agent skills are packaged capabilities that let an AI agent perform a specific kind of work, such as updating CRM records, drafting a research report or scheduling meetings. Each skill bundles instructions, tool connections and rules so the agent can do that job consistently.

How skills work

A skill is a reusable unit of work. It describes when it should be used, what inputs it needs, which app or data source it connects to and what output it returns. When a request matches, the agent calls the skill instead of improvising every step.

Some skills operate a single app, such as reading and updating tickets in a help desk. Others follow a playbook across several apps, such as preparing for a discovery call by researching the account, checking the CRM and drafting questions.

Examples

Common skill types include app operators, which manage records in tools like a CRM, email or calendar. Research skills gather and summarize information from the web or internal sources. Content skills draft copy, briefs and reports. Playbook skills run a multi-step process, such as onboarding a new hire or preparing an audit evidence package.

An AI worker in a sales role might combine account research, outreach drafting and CRM updates. A support role might combine inbox triage, reply drafting and help center lookups.

Why skills matter

Skills make AI work predictable. Without them, an agent has to figure out each task from scratch, which leads to inconsistent results. With them, the same request produces the same quality of work every time.

Skills also make AI easier to govern. Each one has a defined scope and set of connections, so it is clear which permissions it needs. Adding a capability means adding a skill that can be tested on its own, rather than retraining the whole system.

Questions

What is the difference between an AI agent skill and a tool?

A tool is a single function, such as searching the web or updating a record. A skill packages one or more tools with instructions, inputs, outputs and rules for a specific kind of work. The skill tells the agent how and when to use the tools so the result is consistent.

Can I add new skills to an AI agent?

In most platforms, yes. New skills are defined with their purpose, inputs, app connections and expected output, then tested before the agent uses them on real work. Because skills are separate units, adding one does not change how existing skills behave.
