DEFINITION

What is an AI teammate?

An AI teammate is an AI worker that joins a human team as a working member. It takes requests in the team's normal channels, such as chat, email and meetings, shares the team's context, and hands off work to people at clear points.

How it works

An AI teammate lives where the team already talks. People message it in Slack or Teams, copy it on email or invite it to a meeting, the same way they would loop in a colleague. It picks up requests, asks clarifying questions when something is unclear and reports back when the work is done.

Because it serves several people, it keeps track of who asked for what and remembers each person's preferences. Clear handoff rules decide when it finishes a task alone and when it passes the task to a human.

Examples

On a marketing team, an AI teammate might draft campaign briefs, check links before launch and post a weekly results summary in the team channel. On a customer success team, it might prepare account notes before every call and log follow-ups in the CRM afterward. On an executive team, it might gather updates from each function and assemble the Monday briefing.

In each example the work is shared. People set direction and make decisions, and the AI teammate keeps routine work moving between them.

AI teammate vs. AI tool

An AI tool is something a person opens to get help with their own task. An AI teammate is someone the team can assign work to. That changes how it is used. Tools are measured by how much they help one user, while teammates are measured by what the team gets done.

A teammate also needs team-level rules: which channels it watches, which records it can change, who approves its outbound messages and how its work is visible to everyone.

Questions

Where does an AI teammate work?

It works in the channels the team already uses: shared chat such as Slack or Microsoft Teams, email threads, phone and text, and meetings. The point is that people do not need a new app to work with it. They assign and review work in the same places they talk to colleagues.

Can an AI teammate take requests from more than one person?

Yes. That is a defining trait. A good AI teammate tracks who asked for each task, applies each person's preferences and keeps work visible to the group. Permissions still apply, so a request only goes through if the teammate is allowed to touch the records involved.
